On Today’s Minute: Applications for the Great Designer Search 3 close January 15th, 2018. Plus, Japan wins the World Magic Cup and Eli Cassis wins the SCG Invitational.

This morning, Wizards of the Coast announced that it would be holding a third edition of the Great Designer Search. Applications for the Great Designer Search 3 are now open and close on January 15th, 2018. On the 16th, Wizards will send applicants 10 essay questions, which will be followed by a multiple-choice test on January 26. The top scorers will advance to a design test, and the top eight scorers on the design test will become the contestants for the Great Designer Search 3.

At the Magic World Cup in Nice, France this weekend, the main format was Team Unified Standard, and almost every team was playing an Energy deck and a mono-Red deck, plus a third (likely UW) deck. The star-studded Japanese team of Shota Yasooka, Yuuya Watanabe, and Kenta Harane defeated Poland in the finals to become the World Magic Cup champions.

In Roanoke, VA, Eli Kassis defeated Sam Black in the finals of the StarCityGames Season 2 Invitational. The entire field was full of Energy and Red decks, which lead to a Top 8 featuring six Energy decks, two of which faced off in the finals, and two mono-Red decks.
