While the final painting for Morophon, the Boundless is digital, the artist first begin down a traditional path, creating this preliminary color study to begin to sort out the hues for the final work. This study was first revealed on Twitter, and after several offers and requests, the artist brought the work to online auction on the MTG Art Market.

There was considerable interest from multiple bidders, and the study eventually sold to a private bidder who is not yet known. As the artist often works entirely digitally, this was a rare opportunity to own a traditional component by Minguez. As of the writing of this article, the artist has illustrated 84 cards for Magic and continues to be a go-to artist for important legendary and planeswalker commissions.

Art always sells better with a scale dog

Morophon, the Boundless stands to be a longtime EDH favorite, both as a Commander General as well as a staple inclusion to number of tribal deck lists. Whether it is Dragons or Slivers, Morophon provides a fun alternative to the status-quo.
