Season 9 of the Vintage Super League continues next Tuesday at 9 PM Eastern (GMT -5). We’re running a series of articles to celebrate, like our intro to VSL Season 9 and our rundowns of the Top 5 Decks in Vintage and the Top 10 Cards in Vintage. Plus, we’re running a few VSL fantasy leagues on Thousand Leagues!

Week 1 of the Vintage Super League’s ninth season is in the bag, and not a single player made it out unscathed.

Season 9 of VSL is organized into four groups of four players. Group A features Cyrus Corman-Gill, Andreas Petersen, Rich Shay, and Bob Maher, who played a full round-robin tournament last Tuesday night. The competitors brought a variety of decks to the event: Pitch Dredge, Bant Wagon, Dark Petition Storm, and Pyromancer Control.

Results

So, how did week one go for the players?

R1: Andreas Petersen, playing Bant Wagon, defeated Cyrus Corman-Gill on Dark Petition Storm, 2-1
R2: Rich Shay running Pitch Dredge defeated Bob Maher’s Pyromancer Control, 2-1
R3: Rich Shay (Pitch Dredge) defeated Andreas Petersen (Bant Wagon), 2-1
R4: Cyrus Corman-Gill (Dark Petition Storm) defeated Bob Maher (Pyromancer Control), 2-0
R5: Andreas Petersen (Bant Wagon) defeated Bob Maher (Pyromancer Control), 2-1
R6: Cyrus Corman-Gill (Dark Petition Storm) defeated Rich Shay (Pitch Dredge), 2-1

Rich Shay (2-1)

Rich proved that old timers still run the streets in Vintage, and that Dredge is a broken mechanic.

Andreas Peterson (2-1)

Andreas reminded us why he was a finalist in the team edition of VSL last season, and that Managorger Hydra is a card that exists.

Cyrus Corman-Gill (2-1)

Newcomer and Storm aficionado Cyrus demonstrated that Dark Petition Storm is still a Vintage deck, and that Storm is a broken mechanic.

Bob Maher (0-3)

Bob came up short in all three matches despite skillful play, and we look forward to his scheduled matches later this season. Unfortunately, his 0-3 start eliminates him from the playoffs, which frees the Dark Confidant to choose whatever deck he wants for his second appearance this season!

Don’t forget to join our fantasy tournaments on Thousand Leagues every week to take part in the VSL fun and show support for your favorite players and cards!
