Deathrite Shaman and Gitaxian Probe Banned in Legacy, Goblin Chainwhirler Remains Legal in Standard

In today’s hotly anticipated Banned & Restricted announcement, Wizards of the Coast banned Deathrite Shaman and Gitaxian Probe in Legacy, and decided that Goblin Chainwhirler will continue to be legal in Standard…at least until the next B&R announcement on August 20.

You can read our quick analysis of the decisions to ban/not ban here, plus we have plenty more articles coming throughout the week, so make sure to keep checking back!

Teferi, Hero of Dominaria Dominates Modern at GP Barcelona

Teferi has been climbing in popularity in Modern since his release with Dominaria, and he has single-handedly brought Control back the top tier of the Modern metagame. So much so, in fact, that four of the Top 8 decks at GP Barcelona over the weekend were UW/r Control decks featuring Teferi, often in concert with Jace, the Mind Sculptor.

Teferi was joined in the Top 8 by a single copy each of Burn, Grixis Death’s Shadow, and Dredge, which won the GP in the hands of Matti Kuisma, defeating Samuel Deltour’s Krark-Clan Ironworks deck in the finals.

Two Relatively Unknown Players Make the US National Team for the 2018 Magic World Cup

Dylan Brown won US Nationals this weekend with UB Midrange, defeating future World Cup teammate Justin Andrus’s Esper Control in the finals. No Goblin Chainwhirlers made it into the Top 4 of the event, and neither did Owen Turtenwald, the most accomplished American to make the Top 8 of the event. The final spot on the team will be determined by which American has the most Pro Points by September 16, meaning they will likely be joined by either Reid Duke (74), Seth Manfield (71), or Owen Turnenwald (63).
