The Avatar: The Last Airbender pre-release is right around the corner, (it doesn’t sound quite the same coming from me, I know), and as per usual, I’m going to my top five commons and uncommons to look out for!

5. Allies at Last

Combat tricks are always welcome, but Allies at Last will undoubtedly be a premier choice. Allies are pushed pretty heavily, so being able to cast this for only one mana should be no problem. I almost want to say it’s an automatic inclusion, even if you have just a couple of allies.

4. Lightning Strike

Continuing the trend of ol’ reliable. Lightning Strike is a tale as old as time. In this set, however, three toughness seems to be a key number in the early game. Having Lightning Strike available as a common will alleviate any holes in your gameplan, and should be a good way to progress into your mid game if you’re in red.

3. Sokka, Lateral Strategist

Because three toughness is a key factor, Sokka, Lateral Strategist fits very neatly into most curves, while having great stats to boot. A 2/4 Vigilance for three that will give you just give you more cards in colors that are good at both making evasive attackers, and having combat tricks.

2. Sun Warriors

In sets’ past, there was always an uncommon that hyper-enabled a strategy, but seemed innocuous at first glance, Sun Warriors is that card for me. A 3/5 for 4 is a decent rate, but any ally deck is going to want this card as their mid to late game push. A slam dunk for me.

1.Crashing Wave

This card is busted, right?

Typically combat tricks like this are hard to evaluate, but if you’re trying to end the game, when would you not want at least one of these in your deck? At worst, it can stun three creatures and give you some breathing room, and at best, it’s one of many overrun style effects that will slam the door on your opponent in instant fashion. This is the best uncommon in the set in my opinion, and you will lose games to it.

Fundamentally, Avatar: the Last Airbender seems like a very limited-friendly set. I expect pre-releases to be akin to the old Return to Ravnica sets, and those were some of my favorite limited formats of all time!
