Chaos is coming to Magic: The Gathering Arena in this week’s Midweek Magic. Starting this Tuesday players can compete in the most random Magic format around, Momir. Equip your luckiest sleeves and get ready to spin some digital wheels in this week’s free event.

Momir events are some of the best formats for new players while at the same time having plenty of depth and entertainment for even the most experienced players. You don’t have to worry about building a deck, the Arena client or app will provide you with a deck of all basic lands which you’ll use to summon random creatures from all across Arena.

Competing in this event will allow you to earn up to three prizes. The first two you can earn will be Rare Individual Card Rewards, which pull from any rare or possibly even a mythic rare card that is available on Arena. The last reward is a Mystery Cosmetic pack. This pack will often grant a new card style but has the opportunity to give other rarer rewards like avatars and pets.

Midweek Magic: Momir is completely free to sign up for through either the Magic: The Gathering Arena app or game client. The event beings Tuesday at 2 p.m. PT and runs all the way through Thursday at 2 p.m. PT.

Momir Rules

Momir is an extremely easy format to jump in since it is so straightforward. You will receive a deck consisting of a bunch of lands and a unique emblem when the game starts. This Momir Emblem has an ability that lets you pay X mana and discard a card to create a token copy of a random creature card with a mana value equal to the amount of mana you spent.

Using the emblem is the only way to play creatures in Momir so you’ll have to gamble with every creature card ever released in the game. You could get a vanilla 2/3 creature after committing three mana and discarding a card or you could get something like Adeline, Resplendent Cathar. The results are completely random ensuring that no two games will ever be the same.

Tips & Tricks

There isn’t really much you can do in Momir in terms of deck construction, card choice, or card synergies since everything is so random. But that doesn’t mean you can’t plan your plays out a little.

  • Play one of each basic land before duplicating lands if you can. Odds are relatively low that you’ll hit something that has an activated ability with a fixed mana commitment, you’ll want to be able to pay for it.
  • Don’t activate your Momir emblem the first chance you get. Sure, your opponent might get a one or two-drop creature out before you and take a few points of life off, but later in the game you’ll have more cards in hand to pitch for larger creatures.
  • Take a look through some of the cards you can hit on Arena at different mana values and keep that in mind before activating your Momir emblem. For example, the only card at eleven mana on Arena is Metalwork Colossus, which isn’t bad, but there are going to be tons more interesting things to try and get at other mana values.
