In a continuation of last year’s “reveal everything all at once” strategy, Wizards of the Coast announced Magic: the Gathering’s entire 2022 Stadard expansion schedule today on an hour-long livestream. We’ll be returning to both Dominaria (past and present) and Kamigawa, as well as visiting the as-yet-unseen plane of New Capenna.

Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty
Rumors and leaks pointed to a return to Kamigawa and Wizards made it official today with the unveiling of Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty. The set will take place on Kamigawa, 2,000 years after the events of the original Champions of Kamigawa block, at which point the plane has evolved into a cyberpunk-inspired dystopia.
The original Kamigawa block, which released on 2004-5, drew heavily from Japanese mythology and was widely seen as a design and commercial failure. As a result, Wizards has taken its time in returning to the plane.
“It was really important for us to go back to Kamigawa and do it right,” Wizards said during today’s livestream. They say that they’ve worked with a lot of cultural developers and their regional offices to make sure representation in the new set was done right.
Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty will be released in the first quarter of 2022.
Streets of New Capenna
After Kamigawa, Magic will visit a brand new plane, New Capenna, in Streets of New Capenna.
New Capenna that was originally built by angels but has since come to be dominated by demon-led crime families. The plane is a modern, urban setting inspired by gangster movies and each of the five three-color crime families will have their own mechanic and play style.
Streets of New Capenna will be released in the second quarter of 2022.
Dominaria United
We’ll spend the second half of 2022 on Dominaria, starting with Dominaria United.
We lasted visited Magic’s original plane in 2018 and will be returning to kick off the game’s 30th anniversary.
Dominaria United will be released in the third quarter of 2022.
The Brothers’ War
Magic will cap off an eventful 2022 with The Brothers’ War, which will be set during the infamous war between Urza and Mishra that ravaged Dominaria long ago. We’ve already seen some of this war through the hints and historical relics from one of Magic’s first sets, Antiquities from 1994, but The Brothers’ War will step into the past and show Dominaria at the time of the war, along with its people and—of course—the brothers.
The Brothers’ War will be released in the fourth quarter of 2022.
